About the devotion

Devotion to the Sacred Heart, rooted in early Christianity, was affirmed through the visions of St Margaret Mary Alacoque. The Solemnity was officially established in 1856 by Pope Pius IX. This great Feast, always the Friday following Corpus Christi, invites us to respond to Christ’s love with faith, trust, and reparation.

St Margaret Mary Alacoque (1647–1690)

A French Visitation nun and mystic, St Margaret Mary received visions of Jesus between 1673–1675 in which He revealed His Sacred Heart. Through her, the Twelve Promises of the Sacred Heart were made known to the Church. She was canonised in 1920.

St Claude de la Colombière (1641–1682)

A Jesuit priest and the spiritual director of St Margaret Mary, St Claude offered unwavering support to her mission and helped spread the message of the Sacred Heart. He was canonised 1992, and is remembered as a model of trust in Divine Providence.

The Twelve Promises

The Twelve Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus were revealed by Jesus to St Margaret Mary Alacoque during a series of apparitions between 1673 and 1675. These promises are directed to those who are devoted to His Sacred Heart — especially through practices such as attending Mass on the First Fridays of nine consecutive months, frequent reception of the sacraments, and acts of love and reparation.

1. I will give them all the graces necessary in their state of life.

2. I will establish peace in their homes.

3. I will comfort them in all their afflictions.

4. I will be their secure refuge during life, and above all, in death.

5. I will bestow abundant blessings upon all their undertakings.

6. Sinners shall find in My Heart the source and the infinite ocean of mercy.

7. Tepid souls shall become fervent.

8. Fervent souls shall quickly mount to high perfection.

9. I will bless every place in which an image of My Heart is exposed and honoured.

10. I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts.

11. Those who shall promote this devotion shall have their names written in My Heart, never to be blotted out.

12. I promise you in the excessive mercy of My Heart that My all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays in nine consecutive months the grace of final perseverance; they shall not die in My displeasure, nor without receiving the sacraments. My Divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment.
