Gospel Music
Every Sunday at St Patrick’s, the St Patrick’s Gospel Choir (SPGC) sings and plays for the 5pm Mass.

The choir consists of up to 25 experienced singers, plus a backing band (piano, Hammond organ, electric bass, drums), and counts among its number gospel, classical and jazz singers, a West End show singer, recorded singer-songwriters, and award-winning composers.

The objective of the SPGC is to compose, arrange, perform and produce/engineer liturgical music in contemporary styles to a level of quality which people expect of a cathedral choir, and of any commercially performed music. Why should Christians of the iPod generation expect any less when they go to Mass?

Contemporary means modern gospel with soul, jazz and latin
The choir performs contemporary gospel music with a tinge of jazz, soul, classical, and latin. There is a particular focus on singing new works written by accomplished composers who are also members of the choir: for example, our Mass settings include a jazz/soul Mass by internationally renowned guitarist Dave Okumu (the St Jude’s Jazz Liturgy), a CCM setting by young composer and tenor Edwin Fawcett, a Taize setting by Britrocker David Ogilvy, and we are shortly to rehearse a new latin setting by jazz violin phenomenon Julian Ferraretto.

The choir’s musical director is renowned UK gospel singer, composer and director Tracey Campbell, who is probably the finest gospel alto in the UK at the moment (at least we think so!).

All are welcome to the 5pm Mass, and furthermore are welcome to a musical rehearsal which starts at 4.30pm, and to tea and cakes after Mass at 6pm which is provided by the Shalom community.
